Over the weekend, my cousin and I met for martinis and caught up on much needed girl chat. During our conversation, we spoke about all things life and after stating my piece, she informed me that I may be just lacking a little bit of MINDFULNESS. This was a complete shocker because, I’m usually one that lives completely in the moment, but in this case she was right! I seemed to have gotten so wrapped up into the busyness of everything that I haven’t really stopped and paid attention to the beauty of it all.
What is Mindfulness?
If you’re new to mindfulness, you may be wondering what this ever-so popular word means. Mindfulness is simply awareness. It is opening to or receiving the present moment, pleasant or unpleasant, just as it is, without either clinging to it or rejecting it. At times, we allow ourselves to get caught in our own pool of thoughts which sometimes results in potentially losing awareness.
How to Practice Mindfulness
Mindfulness is something we could all use more of in our daily lives. During our busy schedules, it’s easy to forget that we need to come back and check in with ourselves. I’ve listed a few reminders and ways to practice mindfulness during those busy times:
1. Focus on the present moment
Try not to focus on things that went on in the past or that might be coming up in future.
2. Purposefully concentrate on what’s happening around you
A good exercise that will allow you to focus on what is happening around you, is just to pause and take everything in. Whether it is the drive to work, a walk or even simply looking up at the sky for a few seconds to soak it all in. Its easy, and free.
3. Take the time to be fully present, aware of where you are and what you are doing, and not overly reactive or overwhelmed by what’s going on around you.
Being fully present without passing judgment and labeling things around you as good or bad is a great way to settle the overwhelming vibes. When I take a few moments to accept the world around me for what it is, I feel less like the world is passing me by and more like I’m immersed in its beauty. I feel more connected.
